That evening the children fed early. Lancelyn had invited Quentin to join them for dinner. This was cooked by the housekeeper and her sister: chicken liver parfait and oat cakes, followed by pork and haggis sausages with mashed potato and broccoli and chocolate cake to finish with. Marcus and Quentin did most of the talking – about Oxford and history. Marcus was curious about academic life. Surely he was right to leave it and look for a job in the ‘real world’. Lancelyn, Bernard and Molly kept exchanging glances with one another. Towards the end of dinner Quentin told again how he had attended the last lecture of Michael Wallace and what happened after it. Then Bernard took it into his head to recite some poetry:
